Rwenzori Mountains National Park is located in western Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park protects the Rwenzori mountain range, famously known as the “Mountains of the Moon.”
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rwenzori Mountains offer some of Africa’s most challenging and rewarding hiking experiences, featuring snow-capped peaks, glaciers, alpine vegetation, waterfalls, and breathtaking valleys.
The highest peak, Margherita Peak (5,109 meters), is the third highest mountain in Africa and a major attraction for serious climbers and adventure travelers.
Rwenzori offers a completely different safari experience compared to traditional wildlife parks. It is ideal for trekkers, mountaineers, nature lovers, and photographers seeking dramatic mountain landscapes.

The Rwenzori Mountains offer multi-day trekking routes ranging from moderate hikes to technical climbs. The most popular trekking circuits include the Central Circuit Trail and the Kilembe Trail.
Treks typically range from 5 to 9 days, depending on the route and summit goals. Climbers aiming for Margherita Peak require proper mountaineering equipment and experienced guides.
Even shorter hikes in the lower slopes provide spectacular views of waterfalls, giant lobelias, and bamboo forests.
Although primarily known for hiking, Rwenzori Mountains National Park is home to forest elephants, buffaloes, blue monkeys, and several bird species endemic to the Albertine Rift.
The park is especially famous for its unique afro-alpine vegetation, including giant lobelias and groundsels that create an almost otherworldly landscape.
The best time for hiking in the Rwenzori Mountains is during the dry seasons from June to August and December to February. Trails are less slippery and visibility is better during these months.
However, weather in the mountains can change rapidly, so proper preparation and experienced guides are essential year-round.
