Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in southwestern Uganda in the Virunga Mountain range, bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering 33.7 square kilometers, it is Uganda’s smallest national park but one of its most scenic.
The park is famous for mountain gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and volcanic hiking adventures. Mgahinga forms part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which protects endangered mountain gorillas across three countries.
Mgahinga offers a unique combination of gorilla trekking, rare golden monkey encounters, and dramatic volcanic scenery. Unlike larger parks, it provides a more exclusive and less crowded safari experience.

Mgahinga is home to one habituated gorilla family known as the Nyakagezi group. Gorilla trekking involves hiking through bamboo forests and volcanic slopes with experienced rangers in search of these endangered primates.
Once located, visitors spend one hour observing the gorillas in their natural habitat. The experience is unforgettable and strictly regulated to ensure conservation and safety.
Gorilla trekking permits are required and should be booked well in advance due to limited availability.
Mgahinga is one of the few places in the world where visitors can track the endangered golden monkeys. These playful primates live in the bamboo forests of the Virunga slopes.
Golden monkey tracking is less physically demanding than gorilla trekking and offers a lively and entertaining wildlife experience.
The park protects three extinct volcanoes: Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. Hiking these peaks offers breathtaking panoramic views across Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo.
Visitors can also experience the Batwa Cultural Trail, where the indigenous Batwa community shares their traditional forest lifestyle and history.
The best time for gorilla and golden monkey trekking is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February when trails are less muddy.
However, Mgahinga can be visited year-round, and gorilla sightings are excellent in all seasons.
